How newsletter writers make money: subscriptions, sponsors and what to charge

7 October 2026 · 5 min read

The two main ways newsletter writers earn in the UK, what to charge for a paid tier, and how sponsorship money reaches writers.

Most newsletter income comes from two places: readers who pay for a subscription, and brands that pay to sponsor free editions. The best-run newsletters use both. Here's how each works and how to think about pricing.

Paid subscriptions

A paid tier gives your most loyal readers a way to support you, usually in return for extras: an additional issue each week, the full archive, or no ads. Typical UK prices sit between £3 and £10 a month, often with a cheaper yearly option.

Start with a small, clear offer. "Supporters get Friday's extra issue and no sponsors" is easier to say yes to than a long list of perks. A useful rule of thumb is that a few in every hundred free readers will eventually pay, so grow your free list first.

Sponsorship

Sponsors pay to place a short, clearly labelled ad in your free editions. Pricing is usually per thousand sends, known as CPM. For UK newsletters, rates of roughly £20 to £30 per 1,000 sends are common, and specialist audiences can earn more.

The hard part for writers has always been finding sponsors. Selling ads takes time away from writing, and small newsletters struggle to get a brand's attention. That's the problem iynbox is built to solve: iynbox finds sponsors, matches them to newsletters by topic, and places one sponsor in each free edition. Writers can block categories they don't want, and earn a share of what sponsors pay for their sends.

Putting the numbers together

Here's an illustration. A weekly newsletter with 1,000 free readers sends about 4,300 sponsored emails a month. At £25 per 1,000, that's around £107 of sponsor spend a month, of which the writer receives their share. Add 30 paying supporters at £5 a month and that's another £150. Neither is a salary on day one, but both grow with your list.

What about platform fees?

Platforms charge in different ways: a percentage of subscription revenue, a monthly plan, or both. Check what you'll actually keep at the size you expect to be in a year, not just today. On iynbox, the free plan takes a small percentage, and paid plans lower or remove it.
