Newsletter sponsorship in the UK: how it works and what it costs
A guide for brands: why newsletter ads work, how pricing per 1,000 sends works, what a good ad looks like and how to measure results.
Newsletter sponsorship puts your brand inside an email that people chose to receive. It's one of the few ad formats where the reader asked to be there. Here's how it works in the UK, what it costs and how to get good results.
Why newsletter ads work
- Opted-in readers: every subscriber signed up for that newsletter and its topic.
- Attention: one sponsor per edition means no ad grid and no clutter.
- Context: your ad sits next to writing the reader trusts, on a topic you chose.
- Measurable: links are tracked, so you can see clicks and where your ad ran.
How pricing works
Sponsorships are usually priced per 1,000 sends, called CPM. A "send" is one delivery of an edition carrying your ad to one subscriber. UK newsletter rates commonly fall around £20 to £30 per 1,000 sends, with large or highly specialist audiences charging more. Some publishers sell a fixed slot for a week instead.
What a good newsletter ad looks like
Keep it short and human. A headline of up to about 60 characters, two or three lines of copy, and one link. Write it the way the newsletter is written, not the way a banner ad is. A specific offer or discount code makes results easy to track.
Staying compliant
In the UK, newsletter ads should follow the CAP Code, the rules for non-broadcast advertising. Ads must be obviously identifiable as ads, so they should be clearly labelled as sponsored. On iynbox, every ad is reviewed against the CAP Code before it runs, and you approve a preview first.
How iynbox does it
You brief iynbox once by topic, budget and dates. iynbox places your ad in matching free editions, one sponsor per email, and shows you sends, clicks and every newsletter it appeared in. Paid editions never carry ads, which keeps readers' trust in the editions that do.
